Rex,
The current new machines have a grand total of two (2) differences...
A new battery sand seal, and a new armrest lock mechanism. That's it.
The sand seal is primarily for people who water hunt, and is meant to protect the waterproofing o-ring from grit.
The armrest lock is meant to address an issue where some have reported the original armrests slipping out of adjustment.
(I've got 2 of the older CTXs and I've never had either armrest slip...so I'm not sure what causes it....maybe the same grit that kills the o-ring?)
You can read all about it here:
http://www.minelab.com/usa/customer-care/product-notices?article=269893
If you happen to get a REALLY old CTX, it might not have the latest software update. (Unlikely, but who knows?)
There were basically two updates...one early 'coil not found' bug fix, and the later one that upgraded some useful features.
Updates can easily be downloaded and installed, using Xchange2.
